barbie movie smashes box office records

Barbie has achieved yet another remarkable milestone at the box office, surpassing the eighth Harry Potter film to claim the title of Warner Bros’ most successful global release in history.

The film, directed by Greta Gerwig and released in July, captivated audiences from the outset with its vibrant and flamboyant promotional campaign. Featuring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, Barbie swiftly ascended to the pinnacle of global box office rankings and has maintained its popularity during the five weeks since its debut.

On Monday, the 29th of August, Barbie’s global box office earnings reached an astounding $1.342 billion (R24,779,000,000.00), eclipsing the record previously held by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.”

Until now, the eighth and final installment of the teenage wizarding saga, based on J.K. Rowling’s novels, held the distinction of being Warner Bros’ highest-grossing film. In the United States, Barbie achieved an impressive $592.8 million in ticket sales in the United States as of Sunday, the 27th of August, with an additional $745.5 million amassed overseas.

Projections indicate that Barbie is poised to cross the $600 million mark in the United States later this week, an accomplishment achieved by only twelve other films in cinematic history.

Barbie’s monumental triumph for Warner Bros has marked several significant milestones. Previously, it surpassed Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” to become the studio’s top-grossing release in North America. Furthermore, it has secured the title of the highest-grossing film of the year in North American cinemas, outpacing the earnings of “The Super Mario Bros Movie,” which was released in April.

Earlier this month, just three weeks into its theatrical run, Barbie had already grossed $1.03 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman. Presently, the record for the highest-grossing film by a female director worldwide is held by “Frozen II,” co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, with an impressive $1.43 billion in global earnings.

Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the film with her partner and frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach, has become the highest-grossing female director in domestic box office history and the highest-grossing female director of a live-action movie worldwide. In response to this momentous global achievement, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed their pride in a statement.

“Reaching this outstanding achievement is a reminder of the power of moviegoers – from countries in every corner of the globe – coming together to further the celebration of an iconic character that has entertained us for so many decades,” they wrote.
